The short explanation of this alert was:

Recently, many UCS activists urged Congress to vote no on the National Uniformity for Food Act, a bill to eliminate 200 state laws dealing with food safety and labeling. Thanks to thousands of letters and phone calls, the House delayed the vote on this bill and many of the original cosponsors changed their position and voted against it! Nevertheless, the bill still managed to pass the House on March 8.

The National Uniformity for Food Act now moves to the Senate, where many senators have already come out against it. If this bill becomes law, state food safety and labeling laws—including those that provide consumers information about potential carcinogens, allergens, production methods, and genetically engineered ingredients—will be wiped out in favor of the federal government’s "uniform" lowest common denominator. Tell your senators that you can’t swallow this attempt to put corporate greed above the health and safety of your family. Write to your senators today and urge them to oppose the National Uniformity for Food Act.

NOTE: Laws in your state will be affected by this bill. Click here to view a list of laws that would be eliminated. Please personalize your letters with information about how this could affect your state. Every letter makes a difference, but customized letters have the greatest effect!
