The short explanation of this alert was:

Oceangoing ships carrying no cargo fill special tanks with water for balance, picking up and transporting plants, animals, and microbes with that water. When ships arrive from foreign ports and empty this ballast water, they are potentially introducing thousands of non-native species into our waters. Too many of these species spread throughout the nation's bays, rivers, and lakes, dramatically altering native ecosystems and causing serious economic harm to industries and communities.

Congress has delayed passing new legislation on aquatic invasive species for almost six years, but now, the House of Representatives is poised to vote, and we have one last chance to strengthen the bill. Please call and urge your representative to make the bill as strong as possible. Further, please urge your representative to pass your concerns on to the bill’s lead negotiators: Representatives James Oberstar (D-MN) and Steven LaTourette (R-OH). Together, we can make this bill stronger!
