The short explanation of this alert was:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is poised to approve a request to grow 3,200 acres of genetically engineered (GE) rice in Kansas. The rice contains human genes and would produce pharmaceutical substances. This action comes directly on the heels of the USDA’s preliminary approval of another company’s request to grow 1,000 acres of GE drug-producing safflower in Washington State. These requests represent huge increases in the acreage of drug-producing crops compared with earlier approvals.

Drug-producing food crops grown outdoors pose risks to public health and the economic well-being of farmers because they are likely to contaminate the food supply. Significant increases in drug-producing crop acres amplify the risks. Urge the USDA to protect our food by banning drug-producing rice and other “pharma” food crops grown outdoors.
