We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Union of Concerned Scientists.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Programs to fight the arrival and spread of new forests pests have been under-funded for years, allowing critical threats—like the Asian long-horned beetle, the emerald ash borer, and sudden oak death—to spread and endanger state after state. Left unchecked, these foreign insects and diseases could easily cost forest managers, nurseries, the wood industry, homeowners, and municipalities billions of dollars.

This year, we have the opportunity to increase funding for the federal agencies that are fighting invasive forest pests and pathogens. It is not too late to protect the forests of the United States—please call your senators today and ask them to sign the “Dear Colleague” letter on this request for funding.

If you live in Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, or Oregon, both your senators have already signed onto the "Dear Colleague" letter. Call their offices and thank them for their leadership on protecting America's forests.
