Through lax regulations, weak enforcement, and a total lack of public accountability, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has exhibited a miserable track record in regulating genetically engineered (GE) crops—including pharma/industrial crops that are engineered to produce drugs and industrial chemicals. Union of Concerned Scientists analysis shows that unless the USDA bans the outdoor use of food crops such as rice, corn, and soybeans as pharma/industrial crops, our food supply is likely to become contaminated with these substances.
