The short explanation of this alert was:

To help consumers sort out the confusing descriptions on meat packaging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently proposed a label for "grass-fed" meat and the standards producers must meet in order to use this label. The USDA's effort to define the term grass-fed will assure consumers that meat bearing this label is from animals that were fed grass throughout their lives. Raising animals on grass rather than a grain diet has clear benefits for human health, the environment, and animal well-being. However, ambiguous language in the proposed rule could undermine the label by allowing meat from grain-fed animals to be erroneously labeled as grass-fed. Please ask the USDA to clarify the proposed standard so that consumers will know that grass-fed really means grass-fed!

Please make your letter personal by adding in your own thoughts and concerns, particularly if you raise grass-fed animals. Every letter makes a difference, but customized letters have the greatest effect!
