Use Your Gas Receipts to Demand Fuel Efficient Choices!

Eight in 10 Americans are worried that gas prices could seriously damage the economy, including 42 percent who are very worried about it. 94 percent are dissatisfied with the price of gas, and 44 percent are more than just annoyed—they're angry about it according to an August ABC poll.

That message is resonating on Capitol Hill where gas price politics are in full swing in this election year. But in order for gas prices to be an agent for real, positive change, our members of Congress need to hear that Americans believe the best approach to dealing with the issue is more fuel-efficient choices in our cars and trucks. The UCS Guardian blueprint for a better SUV showed how today’s SUVs could already be getting car-level fuel economy. The average fuel economy of American automobiles has stagnated for over 20 years, despite advances in vehicle technology, but the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles, combined with the sagging sales of larger, less-efficient vehicles, show that that the American people are ready for a change.

So send your gas receipt today. It’s a lot easier than dumping tea in Boston Harbor, but your receipt, and your voice, can help start the revolution we need to burn less gas, use less oil, and dramatically reduce global warming pollution.

Sample sentences for note to attach to your receipt:

General:
“I can’t afford these gas prices! We need more fuel-efficient choices NOW!”

SUV, sedan, minivan, pickup owner getting fairly low MPG:
“I own a [YOUR VEHICLE MODEL] that only gets XX miles to the gallon, and look what I’m paying for gas! Automakers can give us more fuel-efficient choices—get them on the road now!”

Hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicle owner:
“I own a [YOUR VEHICLE MODEL], but no one would have to pay these gas prices if automakers were giving everyone more fuel-efficient choices. Please help at the pump, and protect the planet, too!”

Action Tips:

  • If you can, photocopy your receipt: Congressional mail is irradiated, so there is a chance your original receipt could be distorted. We recommend that you photocopy your receipt and write your message on the photocopy. A photocopied receipt can also be faxed (or mailed) to both senators rather than just one.
  • Remember to include your return address: Especially if you are faxing, do not forget to include your full name and address somewhere on your message so that your senator knows you are a constituent and can respond.
  • Protect your privacy: If you have credit card numbers on your receipt and you do not want those numbers in a more public place, be sure to mark them out. Marking them out, then photocopying the receipt works well to ensure privacy.
  • Spread the word: Word of mouth is what will help this effort be a success, so be sure to use our Tell-A-Friend to spread the word, and if you use blogs, listservs, or other online community networks, please post a note with this link.  You can also print out this flyer and distribute it at gas stations, set up your own “clean car—clean planet” car washes, or whatever you can dream up to help get the message out.
