Science abused at the EPA. See how you can help.

EPA scientists are struggling to uphold the agency's mission to protect human health and the environment. These scientists work hard every day making critical decisions that affect our health and safety. They deserve the freedom to conduct their work without interference—and they deserve our sincere thanks. We need to let them know that we will be working with Congress and the next administration to restore independence and scientific integrity to the EPA.

You can help us bring this message of support to EPA scientists by writing a thank you note to the scientists at your regional EPA office. We will collect these thank you notes and local UCS supporters will hand-deliver them. See the tips below to help you write your message, then mail your letter by Friday, May 9 to:

Talking Points

  • Introduce yourself. Let them know why you are writing. Why is a strong EPA based on independent science important to you? For example: "As a parent, I am really concerned about the world I am leaving behind for my children."
  • Thank the scientists for their hard work to protect our health and environment. For example: "Thank you for all you do, everyday, to clear the air, clean our water, and protect our health."
  • Let them know that help is on the way. For example: "I am active with the Union of Concerned Scientists, which is working to make sure that the next administration creates conditions conducive to scientific freedom at the EPA." Specifically, UCS is working to:
      • improve communications policies to allow scientists to speak freely to the press about their findings;
      • make the regulatory process more open and transparent and less susceptible to White House interference;
      • pass a whistleblower law that protects scientists who report the distortion, manipulation, or suppression of science; and
      • strengthen the scientific advice system at the EPA.
