Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Union of Concerned Scientists. The short explanation of this alert was: Is nuclear power safe? It's certainly not as safe as it should be. UCS has just released a new report showing that of the 130 licensed nuclear power reactors in the United States, severe problems have caused 41 to shut down for a year or longer. Ten of these reactors have shut down twice. Why have nearly one-third of U.S. nuclear reactors had such problems? The answer, too often, is poor management and ineffective regulatory oversight. Fortunately, there are solutions. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees nuclear plants, can improve its work and Congress can require information on how the Commission is reaching its goals. Send your members of Congress a letter demanding they require the Nuclear Regulatory Commission improve its oversight, report back to Congress, and help make nuclear power safer for all of us.
