The short explanation of this alert was:
The Senate recently took a historic step toward curbing our dependence on oil and curbing global warming pollution from automobiles—in their version of the Energy Bill they substantially increased the fuel economy requirements for America's cars and trucks to an average of 35 miles-per-gallon.
Unfortunately, the House did not include fuel economy targets for automobiles in their version of the Energy Bill. Now Congress must reconcile these two versions of the bill. The fate of fuel efficiency is in their hands.
Let's turn Congress' sensitivity to pump prices into a message for even stronger standards. Automakers already have cost-effective technologies that could provide consumers with more fuel-efficient choices in cars, pickups, minivans, and SUVs. So help declare independence from oil by sending or faxing your representative and senators a personalized gas receipt, and get all your friends to do it, too! Let us know you took action and what you said by filling out this short form below and clicking "send this message."
|
Here’s what you do:
- Get a gas receipt and circle the total you paid at the pump (we also recommend making a photocopy of it if you can).
- Attach a short note calling for more fuel-efficient options for all American drivers. See below for suggestions.
- Pop it in an envelope with your return address, and send (or fax it) to your senators' and representative's offices. Click here to find their address or fax numbers.
- Let us know you took action and what you said by filling out the short form below and clicking "send this message."
- THEN, TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS TO DO IT, TOO! Word of mouth is what will make this effort a success, so print out this flyer and encourage everyone you know to take action today.
- Don't have a car? You can still weigh in on fuel economy with a personal letter using the information below.
Sample sentences for the note to attach to your receipt:
- General: “I can’t afford these gas prices! We need 35 mpg fuel economy standards with no loopholes!”
- General: “A 35 mpg standard by 2020 is like cutting $3/gallon gas prices by $1 a gallon! We need 35 mpg fuel economy standards with no loopholes!”
- SUV, sedan, minivan, pickup owner getting fairly low MPG: “I own a [YOUR VEHICLE MODEL] that only gets XX miles to the gallon, and look what I’m paying for gas! Support 35 mpg fuel economy standards with no loopholes so I can get the efficient vehicle I need!”
- Hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicle owner: “I own a [YOUR VEHICLE MODEL], but no one would have to suffer these gas prices if automakers were giving everyone more fuel efficient choices. Support 35 mpg fuel economy standards with no loopholes so everyone can get the efficient vehicle they need!”
