The short explanation of this alert was:
Toyota: a company whose commitment to hybrid technology is principally responsible for bringing this fuel-saving technology into the American mainstream.
Toyota: a company that ranked a close second to Honda on our most recent scorecard of automaker environmental performance.
Toyota: a company that complies with rigorous Japanese fuel economy standards set to reach nearly 46 miles per gallon in U.S. terms by 2010.
Toyota: a company that is actively lobbying against the Senate Energy Bill provision that would strengthen U.S. fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
That’s right, Toyota has joined in efforts by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers to scuttle the Senate-passed 35 miles per gallon fuel economy standard. These standards would ensure that current, cost-effective technologies are used to provide American drivers the fuel-efficient choices in cars, SUVs, minivans, and pickups they deserve.
Tell new Toyota USA President Shigeru Hayakawa that he can’t have it both ways. Either Toyota is an environmentally responsible company willing to support sensible fuel economy standards that would save Americans $25 each year—or it is merely another corporation willing to compromise America’s fiscal, environmental, and energy security for its own interests.
